Main image
An outbreak of Diphtheria has been ravaging Nigeria since December 2022, with 15,569 suspected cases, 9,772 confirmed cases, and 530 fatalities reported as of 25 October 2023. The outbreak has seen a sharp increase in cases since July 2023, with over 1,000 new cases being identified every week. Kano state is the epicentre of the outbreak, accounting for over 80% of cases, with the outbreak spreading across 19 states, where active case finding, contact tracing, and vaccination remain low. To combat the outbreak, the IFRC and its membership are seeking CHF 6 million (CHF 5,4 million of which is expected to be raised by the IFRC secretariat) to support the Nigeria Red Cross in scaling up its response in 12 states.
