Malawi Tropical Storm Freddy Floods MDRMW018

Main image
Tropical Storm Freddy ripped through southern Africa twice between 16 February and 15 March, hitting southern Malawi on 12 March and bringing 300-400mm of rainfall in the first 48 hours alone. More than 300,000 people are estimated to have been affected, with many rendered homeless following the floods and landslides. Torrential rains have washed away crops, livestock and houses - some of those left standing have been submerged to the rooftops. Extensive damage to power lines, schools, health centres, and infrastructure, including roads and bridges have also been reported. Through this emergency appeal, the IFRC and its membership are seeking CHF 6 million in support of the Malawi Red Cross Society's response (CHF 5 million of which will be raised by the IFRC Secretariat).
